Why Work With Us?

We do things a little differently from other estate planning attorneys at the Law Office of Laura Cowan. Traditionally, estate planning has been thought of as something intimidating and only for the wealthy. The truth is, estate planning is not about how much money you have. It’s about making things as easy and inexpensive on your loved ones when you are gone. That’s it! And you care about that whether you are leaving $10 behind, or $10mm behind.

If you want to ensure your loved ones don’t have to deal with an emotionally draining, expensive mess when you are gone, estate planning is for you. Our non-intimidating, cost-effective process helps you get important legal documents in place that will make sure your family and assets are protected no matter what.

Here are a few of the ways our firm is different:

  1. We Offer Flat Fees. All our fees are flat and agreed to in advance. At your Peace of Mind Planning Session, you will choose the level of planning and fee that works best for your family, and that will be your investment no matter how much time your plan takes or how many questions you have.
  1. We Listen. At the Law Office of Laura Cowan, it all starts with listening. When you meet with us, we ask questions and listen to your concerns rather than lecture you or recite complex legal jargon. That’s intentional. It’s important to us that you feel heard.
  1. We Educate. We want to be sure you fully understand all your options when it comes to your estate plan. This is why we host free events on estate planning and devote a large portion of your Peace of Mind Planning Session to explaining your options. This allows you to make educated, informed decisions about what is best for your family.
  1. We Keep In Touch. Estate planning is not something you do once and never think about again. Your life, assets, and the law will change. Your estate plan needs to keep up. We offer an annual review at no additional charge and communicate changes in the law that could affect you as they happen.
  1. We Have An Easy Process. Estate planning should not be like pulling teeth! We want to make it as painless as possible. We have an easy, 3-meeting process that will allow you to get your documents drafted and signed without wreaking havoc on your busy schedule.
  1. We Guarantee Your Satisfaction. Finally, we have a 100% satisfaction guarantee. If for some reason we are unable to exceed your expectations, let us know. We will make it right or refund your investment.

Getting Started

Schedule your Peace of Mind Planning Session

The first step is to schedule your Peace of Mind Planning Session. You can book online using this link.

Prior to your Peace of Mind Planning Session, you will receive a link to your online Family Profile where you will answer some questions about your family, assets, and goals. This is so we can best serve you when we do meet. Please send any existing estate planning documents as well.

What To Expect

We have blocked off 90 minutes for your Peace of Mind Planning Session. The purpose of this meeting is twofold:

  1. To review your current estate plan, or, if you do not have one, the State of New York’s plan for your family and assets.
  1. To determine if there is a good fit for us to work together.

If we determine we are a good fit to work together, we will discuss what you want to happen in the event of your illness or death, and begin to design a plan that will make sure your goals and objectives are achieved.

Signing Ceremony

Once your plan has been designed, we will schedule a time for you to sign your documents. We will review the documents with you and answer all your questions. Once your documents are signed, your family and assets are protected (that’s why we call it a Signing Ceremony!) You can make any changes to your documents up to 90 days after signing for no additional charge.

Estate Planning Binder Delivery

At our final meeting together, we will review your asset transfers and you will take home your Estate Planning Binder with all your signed documents for safekeeping. We will continue to answer your questions going forward as well if you ever need clarification for no additional fee.

Plan Maintenance

The maintenance phase of your plan begins now. At no additional charge, we review your plan every year and keep you informed of any changes in the law that may affect your family or estate plan.
